Studying in the Learning Centre

We offer a choice of places to work that suit a range of study needs. Please follow the rules for the different areas; respect others and behave and talk quietly. Students tell us that they do mind when poor behaviour disturbs them.

Getting help

Staff at our help desks will assist you with course work and IT queries. We will teach you effective ways to find information and give advice about the best sources to use. There is a contact list of librarians, by subject.

What's in the collection?

Books, newspapers and magazines, DVDs and internet sources. More details are in the online catalogue. Specialist databases and websites are chosen to match the needs of your course work. This year we will be introducing access to some e-books on the internet.

How many items can I borrow?

This is set by course level:

Foundation, level 1, level 2: 4 items
Level 3: 6 items
Level 4: 8 items

Please note, you need to have your ID card with you every time you borrow something.

How long can I keep something?

Many items are lent for three weeks at first, some for only 1 week. You can have a three week item renewed, twice more, before you have to give it in – unless it is late, or someone else has reserved it. Do this by phone or at the issue desk, with your ID card. Please avoid phoning between 11am and 2pm when it is very busy.

What happens when things are returned late?

Late returns make shortages for everyone; so please return things on time.

Are there fines?

No. If you have overdue items you cannot renew them, or borrow anything else until the late ones are returned. You will also find you are unable to log into a PC if you have something that is very overdue.

Reservations - start a queue

If all the loan copies of something you want have been borrowed, reserve it, so that the next one returned is kept for you.

Look after the resources

You are responsible for anything borrowed in your name, and will have to pay for lost or damaged items. We ask you not to borrow things for others to take – as you will still be responsible for them.
