Annual Student Awards 2012 Winner: Contribution to the Local Community (Olympic / Paralympic value of Respect)
Posted 27th February
Level 3 Housing student, Theresa Oleru, has shown real commitment to helping others in the community.
On top of her coursework, she has become a long-term volunteer at a local homeless shelter: North London Action for the Homeless.
Although other students volunteered over the Christmas period, Theresa is the only student who has continued on a long-term basis. She really enjoys helping others – both in and out of class and recently said of the experience, “ I really enjoy serving people. It gives me great joy to see other people happy. It’s been very rewarding working at the centre. Plus I don’t mind doing the washing up!”
The manager at the centre was really pleased with the support Theresa has provided: “It’s been a pleasure having Theresa volunteer – particularly during busy times at the centre. She has been very helpful.”
