Rene hits the tiles to turn his life around
HCC Tiling student Rene Gomez is paving a path to success after leaving a life of drugs and petty crime behind.
Rene, from Hackney, is in his first year on the Wall and Floor Tiling Level 2 course and is enjoying every minute of it.
The 35 year old, a former drug addict, is now focusing on becoming a qualified decorator, with the aim of starting his own business in the future.
He will continue to gain experience at his relative’s home improvement company for the time being, while he studies at College.
Rene admits that he has made some bad decisions in the past, but is determined to make a fresh start, with the course and its supportive tutors helping him to get back on track.
Rene said: “I really enjoy tiling. Being able to look back at the work I’ve completed gives me a great deal of satisfaction. If my story can help to inspire other people then I will be very happy.”
His outstanding work has already been featured in support service People Can’s newsletter, which referred to him as having a “natural talent” for the trade.
