A new horizon for Vassiliki

“I love cooking in class. Pumpkin soup and cheesy bread are my favourite dishes.”

Eighteen year old Vassiliki Papadopulus is relishing the new challenges and responsibility she faces on her Hospitality and Catering course at Hackney Community College.

Vassiliki, who lives in Hackney, progressed successfully from the College’s New Horizon programme – a personal and social development course for people with learning difficulties – on to the Entry Level Hospitality and Catering course. She is enjoying it immensely.

The bright and bubbly teenager already had a bit of kitchen experience helping to run the Essential Café on the New Horizon course and is delighted that she will be able to further develop her culinary skills at a more advanced stage.

She said: “I want to learn new things and I am enjoying my new course. The teachers are very nice and I have made a lot of new friends.”

Tutor Gillian Adamson said: “The New Horizon Course that Vassiliki attended last year laid the foundations that enabled her to make the transition to the catering course she is now on.”

As well as preparing nice treats in the kitchen, Vassiliki also enjoys reading, writing and drawing.

The New Horizon programme launched last year at HCC teaches vital life skills, including literacy and numeracy to people with learning difficulties and disabilities and prepares them for independent living.

Vassiliki will continue to develop these skills on the hospitality course and will also work towards a qualification which will help her to gain future employment and bag her dream job!
