Annual Student Awards Winners 2010: Outstanding Progress (Respect)

Michelle started at HCC in September 2007 on the BTEC First Diploma in Media
(level 2). She’d left school at age 10 and came to the College with no formal
qualifications and limited literacy skills. Each day she travelled from Brixton on the
bus, but was always the first to lessons. During that year she suffered health
problems, became homeless and subsequently found herself living in a hostel.
She still put 100% effort into her education. Michelle achieved an overall Merit
grade in her qualification excelling in video production.
In 2008 she progressed to the BTEC National Certificate in Media Production.
During that academic year she became the class motivator, and someone her
peers would go to for technical help if a tutor was working with another learner.
Michelle became an inspiration to the class and worked solidly, gaining an overall
Distinction Merit. She was also busy working for community production
companies voluntarily, introducing collaborative projects with the College.
Having now left the College she has taken a year out from university to
concentrate on developing her filming and editing skills in the work place and
benefits current HCC learners by bringing work to the media department.
Michelle is a shining example of success through vocational qualifications.
