Rising star scoops awards double

Posted 22nd March 2018

Rising basketball star, Aaron Badibo, has scooped both Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year for the Southern Conference in the ABL 2017-18 Awards.

New City College student, Aaron, aged 18 from Hackney, who is in the first year of the Level 3 BTEC Diploma in Sport, is a deserved winner of these awards and will be presented with his prizes today at the final play-offs in Leicester.

Aaron, said: “I am very grateful to be selected for Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year. This really shows that hard work pays off… I want to thank my coaches for increasing my role in the team this year – I feel like if it weren’t for them pushing me in practice and games I would have never achieved this award…”

Meanwhile, team mate, Jahmar Pitterson-Cunnigham – in his second year of the Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport – has been chosen by the AoC as the London team captain for the AoC Sport National Championships 2018.
The championships take place in April at University of Nottingham’s David Ross Sports Village and local facilities.

And… former New City College Basketball Academy player, Jerelle Okoro has returned to London to play for London Lions.

Described as an ‘exciting athlete’, 26 year old Jerelle played for Manchester Giants during the 2015-16 season before returning to his roots.

Lions boss, Vince Macaulay, said: “Jerelle is an exciting finisher and competitor. I’ve been watching his development for some time, he will benefit from the veterans we can put around him but his boundless enthusiasm for the game is there for all to see.”

Jerelle added: “I’m beyond excited to play with the Lions. They all want to win so much and it’s an environment where I know I can get better, I’m ready.”

Congratulations to all!
