ESOL students from New City College Hackney and Tower Hamlets campuses received certificates from Sally Staples from Ruth Hayman Trust for raising over £500 for the charity.
The students, who are studying the basic English course for the unemployed, raised the funds by hosting a bake sale, selling sweet and savoury treats from their home countries, including Bangladesh, India, Somalia, Iran, Turkey and Columbia.
Sally Staples, charity trustee for Ruth Hayman Trust thanked the students for their efforts and presented the students with their certificates, before receiving the cheques from ESOL tutor, Maria Elgueta.
Maria, said: “This was a great opportunity for the students to learn entrepreneurial skills but setting up a small shop, costing and selling their goods. Receiving certificates for their efforts has been a bonus and we are pleased to support such a worthwhile charity”
The students said it was “A great experience” and “We are proud to have raised money to support other students like us”
Ruth Hayman Trust awards small grants to support the education and training of adults who have come to settle in the UK, speak English as a second or other language and have difficulty paying for their studies.
