Another year, another victory!
Hackney Community College student have won first prize for the third year running in the North London Catering Cup
Pablo German-Cajamarca and Dee Aung Htoi managed to keep their cool through a pressurised skills contest, to win the skills contest for a fantastic third year in a row!
The competition was hosted at our very own training restaurant, Open Kitchen Bar and Restaurant on Hoxton Street.
The skills competition, with teams from three London colleges, tasked trainee chefs with creating a three course meal, in three hours.
The teams of two (a level 1 and a level 2 student in each) created their own dishes, with the stipulation that the starter must contain peas, the main must contain duck, and the dessert must contain coconut. Meals were to be accompanied by 8 bread rolls. Students planned, costed and submitted their menus in advance of the competition.
A panel of expert judges, judged the students on the key focus points of skills, hygiene, taste, presentation and organisation.
The Speaker of Hackney, Cllr Rosemary Sales, presented the prizes. All participants received culinary related prizes, with the 2nd and 1st prize winners being awarded trophies and vouchers.
Head of Hospitality and Catering at Hackney Community College, Christopher Skippers, pictured above, commented “I am once again very impressed at the standard of all of this year’s entrants and incredibly proud of our winning team. Pablo and Dee worked brilliantly together and they truly deserve this recognition.“
