Construction Skills student, Vinnie Singh, addressed more than 100 influential people as Youth Commentator at the Westminster Employment Forum entitled Preparing Young People for Work.
After much rehearsing and psyching up Vinnie, aged 18 from Islington, introduced important ideas to the discussion that might have otherwise not been talked about.
Following the event, the Times Education Supplement have expressed an interest to involve Vinnie in writing a blog for them.
Vinnie and his classmate, Felix Opoku, have been preparing for this event through the Hidden Leaders programme, part of their Enrichment classes, delivered by Phoenix Education Trust in partnership with Hackney Community College Student Services Department.
The programme aims at engaging college students to motivate themselves to overcome barriers and achieve the goals. All students gain experience in leadership and teamwork and many go on to complete the full training, giving them an opportunity to become paid peer facilitators designing and delivering their own workshops.
Curriculum Manager for Tutorial and Support, Miranda Gay said ‘I’m very proud of the students, having supported them with these projects the commitment and motivation of these individual learners has been exemplar and really highlights the benefits our learners are gaining from cross-college enrichment.’
