500 local vacancies at Hackney jobs and apprenticeship fair

Posted 3rd February 2017

Companies from the construction, hospitality and business sectors promoted over 500 vacancies between them at a job fair on Wednesday, at Hackney Community College’s Shoreditch campus.

The fair was open to students from Hackney and Tower Hamlets colleges as well as local unemployed people. Some of the job vacancies that were promoted on the day are live now and some are in the pipeline for when students have got their qualifications in the summer. Many of the hiring companies reported taking over 20 applications an hour throughout the day.

Daniel Fisher who was representing the new NOBU Hotel in Hoxton said “We need staff in hospitality and catering, housekeeping, office positions as well as security and maintenance.” He has 250 vacancies to fill.

Bryn Parker from Barratt London said “Most of the candidates I’ve seen today have the right attitude and I can see they’re serious about developing their skills and finding work. I visit events like this most weeks and this has been one of the best.”

Companies were looking to recruit apprentices as well as other staff for their teams.

The fair was a partnership initiative between Hackney Community College and its apprenticeship department View Training, Higgins, Hackney Council and many others.

Hackney Community College borough principal Lois Fowler said: “Events like this show that we have the talent within our student cohort and the wider local communities, as well as positive job opportunities for people to apply for within this network of local and national organisations. I am delighted that so many of our students and other local people made links with employers that will set them firmly on the path for their future careers.”

A similar event is planned for September.
