3-college merger confirmation and approval of new corporation name: New City College

Posted 23rd January 2017

A merger that will join Redbridge College with Tower Hamlets College and Hackney Community College has been confirmed by the colleges’ governing bodies. The 3-college group which will be formed by the merger in April 2017 will be the second largest further education college in London and the eighth largest in the country. Hackney and Tower Hamlets colleges merged in August 2016.

The organisation will be financially robust with a turnover of £67m and will support a significant 15,000 students, trainees and apprentices each year. The college will continue to respond to the specific local needs of its communities in the three boroughs. It will also be in a stronger position to develop its regional and national employer-responsive work to make sure that the skills and qualifications offered by the college are those needed by industry. The merger gives the opportunity for the group to develop existing and further specialisms at level 4 and above, in line with the London and national skills agenda.

  • All three colleges within the group were graded ‘Good’ by Ofsted in their most recent inspection, and all have a strong reputation for innovation and excellent support for students.
  • Each college will retain a borough identity, campuses and a substantial curriculum from entry level through to higher and professional qualifications.

Senior managers and teams are already working effectively across the three colleges to share best practice and resources. The formalities of the forthcoming merger are an endorsement of the colleges’ existing positive work together and it is anticipated that the mid-year merger will be a smooth process.

Group Principal and Chief Executive Gerry McDonald said: “The merger approval is very good news for students, for our staff and for the further education sector. It will lead to an even more robust organisation which allows flexibility for local innovation and the tailored support for students that our communities need and expect.”

New City College Corporation: A new name from 1st February 2017

The Tower Hamlets College Corporation has gained approval from the Department for Education to change its name to New City College Corporation from 1st February 2017. The name New City College reflects an organisation that is meeting the changing skills needs of its city and wider region; an outward-facing, proactive and responsive organisation, well-placed to prepare its local communities for the wider skills demands of business and industry. Local borough campus identities will be retained alongside the new corporation name.

Group Principal and Borough Principals

The current Group Principal and Chief Executive Gerry McDonald is also CEO of Redbridge College and will retain the Group Principal position after the merger.

The Borough Principals are: Linnia Khemdoudi at Redbridge College, Alison Arnaud at Tower Hamlets College and Lois Fowler at Hackney Community College.
