Hackney Community College is a GOOD College: Ofsted 2015

In its recently-published Ofsted report, Hackney Community College is considered a ‘Good’ college, with many strong and some outstanding features.

Principal of the College Ian Ashman said: “I am delighted that Hackney Community College, a significant player in Hackney and the wider East London region has been recognised so positively. The report reads extremely strongly, with praise for all departments of the college, for students, staff, managers and governors.”

Staff celebrated the positive report

The Ofsted report, published on 26th October 2015, resulted from a week-long full inspection of the college at the start of the month. It covers wide-ranging aspects including the college’s environment and facilities; students’ behaviour, work and outcomes; and the support they receive for further study and employment opportunities.

Comments from the report include:

  • “Teachers and staff set high standards for learners. They demand high-quality work and respectful behaviour and expect learners to work collaboratively together to solve problems and evaluate their own and each other’s learning. Learners respond purposefully to this approach and work hard to succeed in their learning.”
  • “Learners have a positive attitude to learning. Much discussion by learners in class and around the college focuses on learning and improving the standard of their own and each other’s work.”
  • “Teachers have established a strong ethos of learning for work and they prepare learners well for their next steps in learning and employment.”
  • “Learners’ behaviour at the college is exceptionally good and staff at all levels are skilful at managing and promoting good behaviour.”
  • “Leaders and managers have secured an excellent learning environment for learners.”
  • “Learners benefit substantially from the college’s outstanding partnerships and are well prepared for employment and their next steps in life.”
  • “The college is a key partner for the London Borough of Hackney, working at both strategic and operational levels to improve opportunities for learners and employers.”

Ofsted graded the following aspects and types of provision as good:

  • Effectiveness of leadership and management
  • Quality of teaching, learning and assessment
  • Personal development, behaviour and welfare
  • Outcomes for learners
  • 16 to 19 study programmes
  • Adult learning programmes
  • Provision for learners with high needs

The college now aims to move to the top grade, Outstanding at its next inspection in three years’ time.
