A Level students bank on success at UBS
Posted 23rd July 2010

Volunteering at a local farm and a debate about electoral reform in the UK were just some of the exciting projects six Hackney Community College students worked on as part of this year’s Hackney Summer Internship Programme with investment bank UBS.
The six A Level students – Joseph Adeniji, Aadil Ahmed, Sneh Brahmbhatt, John Connolly, Anthony Osei-Lawrence and Tiffany Thomas – organised a community day at Hackney City Farm in Haggerston where they, along with a group of UBS employees, spent the day fertilising fields, clearing landspace of nettles, rubbish and rubble and painting benches.
The group also showcased their impressive public-speaking, debating and presentation skills as they argued for and against proposed changes to the voting laws in the UK, which included lowering the voting age to 16 and making voting compulsory, in front of a large audience.
Student Sneh who studies English, History, Maths and Psychology said: “If you had asked me four weeks ago if I was looking forward to the debate, I would have laughed in your face! However, when I stood up to give the final speech the rush of adrenalin I felt helped keep me going. I’m now looking forward to going back to Hackney Community College in the autumn where I hope I get the chance to do debating again!”
Alongside these projects, the students worked with the Legal and Compliance team at the bank’s head office in the City and attended several workshops and lectures over the four weeks.
Aadil who studies Chemistry, Physics and Maths said: “This internship has been a really great experience for me. I have learnt so much about banking as well as other skills such as using my own initiative, taking on responsibility and being independent.”
The Hackney Summer Internship Programme, a joint initiative between HCC and UBS, gives A level students the chance to enhance their employability skills through on the job training and experience, as well as explore the possibilities of having a career in business and finance. The scheme, which was established in 2005, continues to help prepare students for the world of work.
