Huge splash of success for media student

Hackney Community College’s Media student Bamanya Bakuru will spend part of the summer at a top specialist media and arts school after winning a prestigious film competition.
BTEC Level 3 student Bamanya, aged 26 from Hackney, was one of a selected few to win the id-East film competition with his debut film. The reward for his outstanding work is a place on an intensive week long summer workshop with media professionals at the Ravensbourne College of Design and Communication.
His impressive short film entitled Water was presented at the Royal Festival Hall last month at the official award ceremony and was described as a very high quality production equivalent to degree standard. Quite a compliment considering this was the first film Bamanya had ever made!
Bamanya drew his inspiration for his film’s water theme from a series of brain-storming sessions in his class and he embarked on his own journey of research, which included attending independent film workshops, to turn his idea into a successful reality. He also worked on his film in the College’s media labs on his days off from lessons to make sure it was perfect for the competition. It took him nearly a month to complete.
He said: “I am so pleased to have won this competition for my first ever film. It’s given me so much more confidence in my ability as a filmmaker! I want to say a huge thank you to everyone who has helped me. I always feel so supported by my tutors and am proud that my hard work has been recognised.”
The id-East film competition celebrates the talent of digital media from schools and colleges across East London and gives budding filmmakers an excellent platform to showcase their work.
