SummerFest Showcase: Something for everyone at HCC

Posted 8th July 2010

The sun shone on the crowds that gathered at HCC’s SummerFest 2010 on 7th July.

Over 700 people came to soak up the campus atmosphere of students’ end of year shows and activities across all the college’s subject areas.

Visitors could build a brick wall and fiddle with a replica car engine. They could get a health check or learn how to make a cocktail with professional style; and children (and adults) had their faces painted by childcare students.

With a strong cultural and artistic theme to the day, fashion and art & design students put on a spectacular, professional-standard catwalk show. Performing arts students staged an open air, cleverly-choreographed interactive dance theatre piece; and art, media and photography students’ impressive end of year shows were dotted around the campus for visitors to explore.

Adding to the entertainment, external organisations took part in the fun. Circus Space and the Conservatoire of Dance and Drama put on breathtaking performances and gave information to the crowds. A talented young artiste from The London Mandarin School performed traditional dances with skill and panache. East London Capoeria gave a colourful display and the campus amphitheatre was opened up for an open mic session, attracting local rap artists Hot Property among others.

Hackney Community College prides itself on being a 2012 Get Set College and as such, visitors could register their interest for Games tickets or to be a volunteer. Primary school children won coveted 2012 stickers by matching sports to their 2012 symbols. HCC Basketball Academy players put on an exhibition match against ex-players – some now professional – who came back to the college for the day. Adding to the 2012 activities, the Geffrye Museum came to SummerFest as part of their Cultural Olympiad schedule.

Two awards ceremonies took place at the Fest. At the Jack Petchey awards event, students received prizes and the winners, parents and friends were treated to a performance by Discover Young Hackney winner Rhiann Cunningham, a pupil at Cardinal Pole School. At the Basketball Academy Awards a lively crowd cheered on friends and team mates, recognised for talents on the pitch.

Principal Ian Ashman said: “This year’s HCC SummerFest was a great showcase of our students’ work and it was a superb opportunity to open up our campus to the public and other local organisations who came to take part. Our students, staff and friends put on a fabulous day for everyone to enjoy. It was an enormous, successful team effort.”
