Leroy Logan MBE gets Gold Award at the Commons

Posted 16th June 2010

Top police officer Leroy Logan MBE was presented with a Gold Award from the Association of Colleges at a ceremony at the House of Commons yesterday. In a moving speech he said it felt as good as receiving the MBE.

Leroy had studied science at Hackney Community College in the 70s. He said his studies sparked creativity and innovation through his successful career.

Also at the event were his science teacher Colin Tompson, who is retiring from the college this year, and current HCC student Reece Baker who is looking forward to learning from Leroy’s success.

Leroy worked his way up from a uniformed officer in the Met Police to become Deputy Borough Commander and Superintendent in Hackney. He has played a lead role in high profile inquiries including the Damilola Taylor investigation and put forward the case for affinity-based policing, which demonstrates the advantages of diversity in active policing.

His Gold Award was one of just 7 presented this year to ex college students from across the country. Other winners for 2010 included film star Colin Firth and economist Spencer Dale. The Gold Awards recognise the vital role that colleges play.

Leroy said “I know the dedication shown by HCC staff when I was a student has been built upon by the current team, giving quality support to students regardless of their background or culture.”

He is currently working towards a safe and secure 2012 Games, as a member of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympics Games Policing Co-ordination Team.

Reiss Baker, aged 19, is studying ICT at HCC. He felt privileged to be at the Awards with Leroy: “I want to make something of my life, to leave a mark and give something back to the community I’ve grown up in.” he said.

Ian Ashman, principal of Hackney Community College, said; “We’re thrilled that Leroy has won this award. He’s a shining example of how Hackney’s students can go on to achieve great things. Leroy is a good friend to the college and plays an important role in inspiring our current students.”
