Food safety comes first

Posted 2nd June 2010

Hackney Community College’s on-site training restaurant Open Kitchen provided the perfect setting for food safety competition winner Adam Deen to collect his prize.

Ten year old Adam who attends William Patten Primary School in Stoke Newington was the lucky winner of the poster competition launched by Hackney Council to help promote cleanliness in the kitchen in the run up to National Food Safety Week.

“I thought I would use a rhyme because it’s catchy, and we always wash our hands before cooking and eating. I decided to put the whole thing in a single drop of water to bring it all together” said Adam.

His winning poster – with the slogan “Use your head or germs will spread” – will be exhibited in all Hackney primary schools and council buildings during National Food Safety Week which takes place from 7 – 13 June.

Adam received a Nintendo Wii for his tremendous effort, which he came down to collect at the pristine Open Kitchen. The College training restaurant is a leading example of how food is meant to be prepared to the highest standard in a clean and safe environment and Adam and his Mum enjoyed a tour of the facility.

Head chef and HCC lecturer Tony Boorman, who also judged the competition said: “Cross contamination is one of the most common causes of food poisoning in today’s kitchens and so good food hygiene is very important. It has been great to see how the youngsters have highlighted the dangers of bad food hygiene in such an informative & eye catching way. Hopefully it will make others aware of the importance of preparing food properly.”

Open Kitchen is run by Hospitality and Catering students at HCC, under the guidance of professional staff who specialise in various areas of the industry. It is open to the public and offers a wide range of delicious meals at the fraction of West End prices.
