Skilled HCC bricklayer wins regional heat of prestigious contest

Posted 21st May 2010

Hackney Community College welcomed top brickwork students from across London to compete in this year’s regional Guild of Bricklayers competition yesterday – where one of our students made it through to the national final.

Level 2 student Brendan Kearney, aged 19, came out top as he impressed with his exceptional standard of work.

Students from seven colleges, including College of North West London, Barking and HCC, showed off their brickwork skills as they vied for a place to represent London in the national finals.

The competition’s two categories – seniors and juniors – give students at different levels in the trade a fair chance to demonstrate their ability. Each student had to construct an exact replica of a technical drawing shown at the beginning of the contest and were judged based on accuracy and quality. Brendan excelled in the juniors group.

He said: “ I’m speechless! It was a good moment for me winning this competition and I am well pleased with the result. I would like to thank all the bricklaying tutors for their help.”

The competition, which was hosted in the college’s Brickwork workshop, was judged by representatives from Weinerberger, a brick specialist company and Tarmac, a mortar manufacturer who also sponsored the event.

Dennis Westwood, National Competition Secretary at the Guild of Bricklayers said: “The aim of competitions like this is to encourage future bricklayers to implement good practice and to produce high quality work.”

The winners of the regional competition earn a place at this year’s national finals in Liverpool on Wednesday 30 June.
