Duncan builds success at Britain's biggest skills competition

Posted 18th May 2010

Bench Joinery student Duncan Jones showed judges that he’s the best in London, winning the Joinery category at the regional heat of Britain’s biggest construction skills competition – SkillBuild 2010. He was one of 90 entrants in the London contest, which showcased six different construction skills. Duncan, aged 24, is training in the trade at Hackney Community College. Contestants were all given the same brief, aimed to test advanced joinery skills.

Hackney Community College Principal Ian Ashman said: “We’re very proud of Duncan, who has done incredibly well in this competition. This success is a testament to Duncan’s ability and dedication to his training, and to the support of his tutor.”

SkillBuild 2010 is run by ConstructionSkills, the sector skills council for the Construction industry. TV celebrity Tommy Walsh, from Hackney, met contestants at the event and encouraged them through the day. Duncan now has a chance to go through to the national final, which will be held in Wales, in June.

Helen Bennett from ConstructionSkills said: “It is great to see the new generation of construction workers from London demonstrate the immense talent we have in the industry. All the competitors including Duncan are an excellent example of the benefits and skills a trainee can bring to a company, including making sure that that industry has the right skills in place for the future.”
