This course is an introduction to housing primarily for people who are working in the social housing sector. It is also aimed at tenants and residents wishing to explore housing issues to enhance their involvement and understanding.

Course details

The Apprenticeship consists of a number of qualifications that make up a framework:

  • Competency Qualification (NVQ)
  • Technical Certificate (CIH) – which is made up of 4 units:
    • Housing provision and housing organisations
    • Customer care in the housing context
    • Careers and opportunities in housing
    • Developing skills for working in housing
  • Functional skills / key skills at level 1
  • English
  • Maths
  • ICT
  • Employer Rights and Responsibilities workbook

Exam details

There is a written and practical CIH assessment at the College and work-based assessment.

Level 2 Literacy or GCSE equivalent

Housing: Advanced Apprenticeship level 3

Name of qualification gained

  • Chartered Institute of Housing Level 3 Certificate in Housing Practice (QCF)
  • City & Guilds NVQ

This course is a vocationally related qualification for housing professionals working in a front line capacity in the housing sector. It is broadly comparable to an A Level standard.

The Apprenticeship consists of a number of qualifications that make up a framework:

  • Competency Qualification (NVQ / QCF)
  • Technical Certficate (CIH)

    CIH Level 3 structure is:
    • the mandatory units comprising 3×4 credit units (completion of these leads to the Level 3 Award in Housing Practice)
    • a specific pathway (e.g. managing housing services, or caretaking and concierge services) comprising 3×3 credit mandatory units)
    • 2 further units of 3 credits from an optional list (to gain the Certificate)
    • 6 further units of 3 credits from an option list (to gain the Diploma) *Functional Skills / Key Skills at level 2 (English, Maths and ICT)

      Who should go on this course?

      The course is for people who are already working or participating in the management of housing. It aims to develop your skills and knowledge and give you an opportunity to speicalise in a particular area of housing.

      Entry requirements

      Level 2 Literacy or GCSE equivalent and / or level 2 Housing qualification.

      Possilbe next steps

      Level 4 Foundation or BA (Hons) degree.

      Start dates

      February 2011 and September 2011.

      Length of course

      The length of time to train depends on the individual, but it is estimated at 24 months.
