Wall and Floor Tiling
“Tiling used to be one of the less well-known construction trades – but recently it’s become more and more important. We now tile much more than we used to and it’s seen as very desirable to use wall and floor covering for domestic bathrooms and kitchens. It’s also very popular in commercial buildings – such as hotels, swimming pools and gyms.
Hackney Community College is one of only two centres in the whole of London to deliver courses in Wall and Floor Tiling. Based in the heart of London, the College has great links with the industry – including major manufacturers of tiles, adhesives and sundry products.
Working closely with them means we’re kept up-to-date with the newest products and developments – making sure we’re work-ready and able to knowledgeably advise our clients on the best way to carry out their tiling projects.
It’s a great trade to get into, as it’s one of the easiest trades to set up your own business. The work is very challenging – but also very enjoyable – and you can earn an average of around £150 a day!
As well as full-time qualifications, the college also offers short courses for the DIY market, which runs at weekends. Not only do these courses enable you to do basic tiling in your home; it also gives you the confidence to speak knowledgably to professionals that you employ.
The facilities at HCC are fantastic. They have the most up-to-date and challenging workshops that give great opportunities to practice and develop skills that are needed in the workplace. You’ll be set life-like projects, so you’re work-ready once you complete your course.
Our tutor is brilliant. He’s recognised as an expert in his field – having many years’ working in the trade for some of the most well-known tiling companies in the UK. He’s enthusiastic, knowledgeable and keen to pass on his experiences to us.
Maybe that’s why we love studying here so much and why so many of us achieve! Some of us even have our work hanging proudly at City Hall! So come and have a look round the campus and see why HCC is the best place to be!”

Hackney Community College Students Decorate City Hall
Jennette Arnold, Chair of the London Assembly, met students at their new tiling facility where she commented “as ever I’m inspired by the commitment of work and effort that staff put in everyday to ensure that students can develop and learn a new skill. The students can start to make a living – and it’s a great skill to have.”
Two of the students, Emerald Skerrett and Derek Jackson, who met Jennette presented her with two beautiful mosaics to display in City Hall. One of the creative mosaics was a colourful butterfly and the other was a chick in an egg.
Jennette had previously met several other HCC students after a tiling student, Valerie Antoine, won a gold medal at the Olympic Skills Showcase. Her work was a creative interpretation of a swimmer diving into a pool. Jennette liked the piece so much it is on display at the prestigious City Hall – which will sit alongside the two new pieces.
