Mastic Asphalt is the best waterproofing product on the market – and has been used for centuries. And Hackney Community College is the only College in the Country to deliver courses in it!
Mastic Asphalt is a traditional trade, usually handed down from father to son – but it’s now opening up to others. Nowadays, it’s a regulated industry – which means you have to be qualified to work as a Mastic Asphalter – so getting qualified is a must! It’s a great trade – where you can earn an average of £150 a day!
This versatile product is still applied with same hand tools as years ago. We’re the only recognised craft in the building industry and your first job will be to make your own tools – called asphalt floats.
You’ll then use your tools and learn how to safely apply the product in a variety of ways – so no matter what surface you’re employed to asphalt – you’ll be prepared.
Our practical lessons are supported by theory lessons – where you’ll learn about different types of roofing, paving, flooring , green roofing, new products coming onto the market and more!
You’ll also spend time learning the latest health and safety policies – making sure you’re ready for employment.
HCC’s facilities are state-of-the-art – with a workshop set up like a real work site would be. It even comes complete with a 1-tonne asphalt mixer. This gives you everything you’ll need to experience what it will be like to work on site.
We have good links with major employers who take a big interest in us. So it is sometimes possible to get offered a job with them.
If you’re not working, then you can study at the college full time. But, if you are employed, then you can still get your qualification by doing part-time NVQ or Diploma. The college also has qualified assessors who can come to your workplace – fitting in around your job.
The college is centrally located – but if you’re employed and from out of town, C Skills will pay for your travel, training and accommodation.
The trade is also carbon neutral – and as a college, we additionally recycle all of our mastic asphalt materials.
We offer both level 2 and level 3 diplomas – so come and have a look round the workshop and see why HCC is a great place to study!
