London City Hospitality Centre (LCHC)
“Welcome to the London City Hospitality Centre; Hackney Community College’s hospitality and catering department. Hospitality is one of the biggest growth areas of work in the country. It’s a really exciting and vibrant industry to be in – and you could be part of it!
LCHC has its own lively, contemporary style bar and restaurant called Open Kitchen – taking covers of up to 80 people at any one time. The restaurant has a great reputation for serving locally sourced produce for the public – as well as private bookings. As a student, you’ll work in Open Kitchen every week – gaining real experience of the industry by working both front and back of house. This means that you could be making cocktails, preparing food, meeting and greeting customers or waitressing.
You’ll also have the opportunity to demonstrate food culture from around the world by delivering master classes in our industry-standard kitchens. Students come from diverse cultural backgrounds and have run workshops on food from Africa, the Middle East, Caribbean and Europe.
Based in Shoreditch, we’re ideally located for the hospitality industry; it’s a prime area for up and coming diverse types of restaurants, bars and bistros. We’re working with leading restaurateurs who have chosen this area as an exciting place to open new venues. As a student, you’ll get the opportunity to gain experience of the restaurant scene in a very exciting area of London.
Our courses run from Level 1 through to Level 3. You can choose to study part or full time – or you could become an Apprentice. We also offer work-based learning – so our assessors can come to you and assess you while you work. The options for achieving a qualification are vast!
What’s more, our staff are highly experienced in all areas of the industry – so they’ll pass on their experiences to you. But perhaps most importantly, our students succeed. Our success rates are well above the National Average – and many of our students progress through the levels and go on to gainful employment; some have even set up their own business!

Pupils from Oak Park School got a taste of hospitality when they visited LCHC, the hospitality section of Hackney Community College.
They learned about the importance of maths in the workplace, creating their own pizzas and costing them up, taking orders and working out the bill. They then went on to make mocktails – again embedding numeracy into their lesson. Afterwards, they sat down in Open Kitchen and enjoyed their own homemade pizzas!
