Open to all
As the name “One World” suggests, we welcome for children of all backgrounds. In fact, we pride ourselves on actively promoting all aspects of equal opportunity practices across the nursery. If your child has any disabilities or special educational needs, please talk these through with us when you enrol your child so we can plan to fully meet your child’s needs.

At One World Nursery we provide a stimulating, exciting and safe environment for young children, where they can discover, communicate and learn to express themselves at many levels. Play is an essential part of this learning process. We use play to extend the boundaries of the child’s experiences, which helps them to understand themselves and the world around them.

They’ll be in safe hands
Our childcare staff team are experienced and highly-qualified childcare professionals. Qualifications include BTEC in Early Childhood Studies, NNEB, relevant NVQs and Degree in Early Childhood Studies. All our staff are carefully vetted before they have contact with the children. At the nursery we support many students studying Early Years Education and other related courses at Hackney Community College, by offering them student placements and supporting Early Years Education Apprenticeships. We’re proud that by doing this we support these students in achieving and realising their ambition. All students are thoroughly vetted before they start.

What your child will get up to
We believe in creating a safe and educational experience for your child. So the day is organised around ensuring they are kept stimulated. We work towards the Early Years Foundation Stage and the six areas of learning:

  • Physical skills
  • Creative development
  • Knowledge and understanding of the world
  • Communication, language and literacy
  • Problem solving and numeracy
  • Personal, social and emotional development

Depending on their age, activities range from messy play, to role play and circle time. With a number of age related rooms at the nursery, each child is placed with other children of the same age group, so they’re bound to make plenty of friends. We offer a well resourced, clean and purpose-built outdoor play area for the children play in.

Outings
Weather permitting, we take the children out on as many outings as possible. On a weekly basis each group visits the local library. Other trips may include visits to local parks, museums and zoos. You will be required to sign a written permission form for every outing.

How to enrol
We have a set number of places available for children under the age of five. The College is doing its best to meet as many people’s needs as possible. However, places are limited. We therefore ask you to enrol your child for a place in the nursery at the same time as you are enrolling for a class / course. To do this, you will need to complete both the enrolment form and the nursery application form.

How the places are allocated
A designated proportion of places are reserved for part-time students. This is reviewed on an annual basis. Priority is then given to single parents, parents for whom English is not their first language, children with disabilities, special education needs, and students returning to complete a course. There will be an initial limit of two nursery places per student. Remaining places are giving out on a first-come, first-served basis.

It’s important to note:

  • We are only able to offer places to learners with children aged two and above.
  • A class place does not guarantee a childcare place.
  • If you are a student at the College, places can only be offered at times when you are time-tabled to attend the College.

“How much does it cost for HCC students?*
The cost of childcare varies upon the hours you are time-tabled. The Senior Administrator, Childcare Services Manager or Deputy Childcare Services Manager can advise you of these fees.

Please note that:

  • Payment of fees is essential and non-payment will jeopardise your place in the nursery.
  • Fees are due on a termly basis and you are booked to use the nursery whether you attend or not.
  • If your child is sick and does not attend your fees are still payable.

How much does it cost for non HCC students who are working?
The cost for working parents is calculated on a daily fee and this is dependent upon how old your child is. The Senior Administrator, Childcare Services Manager or Deputy Childcare Services Manager can advise you of these fees.

Settling your child in
It’s very important that your child feels secure within the setting and the best way to do this is with your help. We therefore ask that you make time to settle your child in and spend time with the child’s key worker to discuss your child’s needs. Please make sure you have set aside enough time to stay with your child for as long as necessary to ensure they feel confident and settled into the nursery environment. In some cases it may take a while for your child to settle – but don’t worry, your tutor will support you in this.

Placement arrangements
As your course may require you to spend some time on a placement, it may be able for your child to stay in the nursery during this time – if you are unable to find alternative arrangements. You need to discuss this with the room supervisor beforehand, to clarify if there is a space for your child, as there may be a possibility that there is not. If a place is available then this is dependent on staff having an emergency contact number and person available for you at all times. If this is not possible, then you must make alternative arrangements for these times.

If anyone other than you is picking up your child, you must let us know beforehand. If you do not do this, your child will not be allowed to leave the nursery.

Sickness, medication and absence
We appreciate the frustration and difficulties of parents with sick children; however we ask that in the interest of both your children and others, you do not leave a child who is clearly unwell in the nursery.

Children that are unwell cannot be allowed to attend the nursery until they are recovered. Staff are not allowed to dispense medicine. You are asked to return to the nursery when necessary if / when your child requires medication.

You should let us know if your child is going to be away for more than two weeks in a row, or we may give their place to someone else. Please note, the daily fees remain payable whether your child attends or not.

What to wear
We often play with water, sand, clay, paint etc, so it’s advisable to dress your child in suitable clothing. We do however do our best to protect them with aprons. If possible, please leave two changes of clothing with us – in case of spills or accidents. Please ensure all clothing is clearly labelled with your child’s name.

Refreshments, lunch and toiletries
Please do not send sweets, crisps etc to the nursery. Your child will not be allowed to eat them during nursery hours. You may, however, send fruits if you wish on birthdays and special occasions, that can be shared with other children.

We give the children healthy snacks during the morning and afternoon. If attending, at midday we provide a hot lunch. The children’s food menu is displayed on the parents’ notice board in the reception area.

If your child has any special dietary requirements, please discuss these with their key worker or a supervisor before your child starts.

Nappies and wipes
Please provide disposable nappies/wipes and milk feeds for babies. Please ensure that you have discussed this with your child’s key worker.

Parental Participation
In line with the Children Act 1989 and Good Childcare Practice, parents/carers are encouraged to attend their child’s care planning and review meetings and inform key workers about their child’s needs and achievements. You are also encouraged to attend nursery parent meetings, and to help during nursery open days, fund raising events and special meetings. We also expect that parents participate in organised nursery outings and major celebrations.
