Education geared to success and progression
A consultation period is underway for a brand new University Technical College (UTC) in Hackney.

The Hackney UTC, billed as a new concept in education, will be an exciting alternative environment for 14-19 year-olds to study in. Students will follow a curriculum of professional and technical study in a specialist area, alongside GCSE-level qualifications in English, maths, science and IT. Students will also have the option to study a related language and a humanities subject. The detail of the curriculum will be influenced strongly by employers and universities to make sure that students have the best possible chance of a successful future in higher education and/or work.
Specialising in digital and health technologies
The two specialist subject areas to be offered at the Hackney UTC are digital technology, and health/ medical technology. These subjects were identified due to the range of local opportunities that the students will be able to progress to.

Dorothy Smith, Director of Group Public Policy at BT Group, who will sit on the board of the new UTC, said “BT are delighted to be involved with such an exciting new project, which, by focusing on the area of digital media, will help to provide young people with the knowledge and skills they will need in the economy of the future.”

Nancy Hallett, Chief Executive of the Homerton University Hospital NHS Trust said: “The Homerton is delighted with the announcement that the UTC project has been approved and that we will now be working with partners to make it a reality. We are pleased to be supporting this exciting development for local people.”
The new UTC will be equipped to the highest standard and will be situated on the award-winning Shoreditch Campus of Hackney Community College. Students will have direct links with BT, the Homerton Hospital and the University of East London and Hackney Community College.

John Joughin, Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University of East London, will also be a board member. He commented: “This is an exciting development for education in East London and will provide young people the best possible opportunities when looking at their future careers. This is not just an investment in young people, in their lifelong learning journey, but an investment in the community as a whole with the learning and teaching geared towards emerging industries in the local area.”
Ian Ashman, principal of Hackney Community College, has led the application for a local UTC. “This is a really exciting, new opportunity for young people. They will get the best education possible, with state-of-the-art facilities: A strong preparation for their successful future.”
