  • Tom Mautner - Chair of Governors

    Finance, Policy & Resources Committee Curriculum, Quality, Equalities & Standards Committee

    Tom was the Chairman and Chief Executive of a plc car dealership group for more than 20 years. He also has a property company and an international IT consultancy company. He has been a member of the Executive Boards of the motor industry’s UK and European trade federations. Tom was a member of the Governing Body of the former Hackney College from 1990 until the incorporation of Hackney Community College in April 1993, when he was appointed to the Board of the new Community College. Tom became Chair of the Corporation in October 2007. He also chairs the Corporation’s Search Committee and the College’s two subsidiary trading companies, City Edge and the Sports and Performing Arts Centre (SPACe). Tom is a Justice of the Peace, sitting in the Adult and Youth Courts. For relaxation, he plays the drums in a semi-professional blues band.

  • Anthony Painter - Vice Chair of Governors

    Chair of Curriculum, Quality, Equality and Standards Committee Finance, Policy & Resources Committee Remuneration Committee

    Anthony Painter is a political and public policy researcher and writer, and an associate researcher at the think tank, Policy Network. In 2009, he authored Barack Obama: the movement for change and his next book, Left without a future?, is published in 2012. He has been a governor of Hackney Community College since 2004 and is currently its Vice Chairman. Anthony is also Chair of Hackney UTC, the first University Technical College in London.

  • Ian Ashman

    Principal/Chief Executive

    Ian Ashman has been Principal of Hackney Community College since January 2007. Prior to this Ian spent 18 months as an independent consultant in the area of education and skills. Projects included developing the National Financial Services Skills Academy, quality support for other colleges and developing the London – Beijing vocational education project. Ian worked previously as Principal of Lambeth College, as Deputy Principal at Hackney Community College and prior to this worked for local government. Ian has a degree in Economics and a post-graduate teaching qualification and lives in Hackney, London.

  • Elaine Battson

    Finance Policy and Resources Committee

    A certified accountant, Elaine Battson is Head of Finance at the Institute for Learning, the independent professional membership body for teachers and trainers in further education. Elaine was previously Finance Director at the Institute of Education, University of London. Elaine was appointed to the Board in December 2010.

  • Richard Brown

    Finance Policy and Resources Committee

    Richard Brown is Headteacher at Hackney Free and Parochial School in Hackney and a member of the Learning Trust 14-19 Executive Committee. Richard is also Vice Chair of the Hackney Headteachers’ Forum and Chair of the Attendance and Behaviour Partnership. In addition, Richard has worked with the College in the foundation of South Hackney Sixth. Richard joined the Board in October 2010.

  • James Cannon

    Finance, Policy and Resources Committee.

    Jim Cannon serves on a number of local charities and has previously represented the De Beauvoir ward in Hackney. He joined the Board of Governors in July 2005. Jim worked in the IT industry for 35 years including being a Project Director in Romania and Portugal. Projects included the conversion of Portugal’s Social Security IT systems to the Euro.

  • Gordon Critchlow

    Curriculum, Quality, Equalities & Standards Committee

    Gordon Critchlow’s main expertise is in customer service. He has worked for a large UK telecommunications business as head of planning and control (Customer Service). Gordon has a Degree in Electrical/Electrical Engineering and a post graduate diploma in management and business studies. Gordon is Vice Chair of the Curriculum, Quality, Equality and Standards Committee.

  • David Glass

    Audit Committee

    Chair of Remuneration Committee David Glass is the Profit Centre Partner for UK Corporate and Commercial work at Pritchard Englefield and handles all aspects of mergers and acquisitions work, banking, insolvency, EU and other commercial work. He studied law at Cambridge University and was a TAPP Post-Graduate Scholar on the basis of his academic results. David lectures extensively on a broad range of company and commercial legal topics and has written a number of legal articles on subjects as diverse as investment advertising, the doctrine of “ultra vires” and international law. David has been a Governor of the College since 2000.

  • Rachael Halliday

    Govenor

    Appointed to the Board in October 2011, Rachael is a trained nurse with 22 years’ experience working in the NHS and holds a Master’s degree in nursing. Rachael is currently the head nurse in a division of the Homerton NHS Foundation Trust and is responsible for setting the direction for nursing within it, for developing the divisional strategy and delivering high standards of care within budget.

  • Win Harris

    Governor

    Win was appointed to the Board on 20 July 2010. In her career in the civil service, Win specialised in EU and international business, working both on education and employment and on justice and home affairs. Win was Director of the Joint International Unit, advising the Department of Children, Schools and Families, the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills and the Department for Work and Pensions and had a particular focus on building international education partnerships, particularly with China and India and through the Prime Minister’s Initiative. Prior to this Win served for 5 years as Director for Education and Training in the Government Office for London, being responsible for establishing and monitoring the network of Training and Enterprise Councils and of Career Service providers in London.

  • Dame Anna Hassan

    Curriculum, Quality, Equalities & Standards Committee

    Anna Hassan has been a governor of the College since May 2005 and has worked in Hackney for over 29 years. She has held several senior posts in Primary Schools. She was appointed as Head of Millfields Community School in November 1993. She is a School Governor Trainer and works with the DCSF on Education Committees and Local Education Authorities to support Newly Qualified Teachers, Heads and others. Anna was made Dame Commander of the British Empire in the 2006 New Year Honours List for services to education.

  • Cllr. Rita Krishna

    Curriculum, Quality, Equalities & Standards Committee

    Rita has been a local councillor for Stoke Newington Central Ward since 2002 and is the Council’s Cabinet Member for Children’s Services. As Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, Rita leads on all strategic issues relating to children and young people in the Borough and chairs the boards in the Children’s Trust arrangements. Rita has a particular interest in workforce issues, as it is the quality of the workforce which largely determines outcomes for children. Rita is also chair of Team Hackney’s Children and Young Peoples’ partnership and was appointed to the College’s Board in December 2007.

  • Ian Lewinson

    Staff Governor

    Ian is a qualified lecturer with over eighteen years of teaching experience at Hackney Community College. He has also been employed as a Senior Practioner since 2001. Ian has an MA in Educational Management and Administration and was elected as academic staff Governor in December 2009.

  • Jackie Moylan

    Audit Committee

    Appointed to the Board in December 2008, Jackie has 19 years of experience as an auditor and manager for the Audit Commission. She has recently taken up the post of Assistant Director of Finance at the London Borough of Hackney’s Children and Young Peoples Directorate.

  • Oris Ryan - Support Staff Governor

    Oris is a Leadership & Professional Development Officer at Hackney Community College. He was elected as support staff Governor in April 2007.

  • Max Weaver

    Chair of the Finance, Policy and Resources Committee

    Max comes from a background in academic law and has been in senior management for over twenty years. He has interests in the practical effects of law as it operates in society and in the nature of judicial and other decision making. He also serves on the Board of the Bishopsgate Institute and the Management Committee of the Mary Ward Legal Centre. He spent five years on the Board of Leaside Regeneration. He is also a founder member and past Master of the Guild of Educators and an Honorary Professor of the Moscow Higher International Business School. Max has been a Governor of the College since 2002.

  • Peter Wright

    Finance, Policy & Resources Committee

    Peter has worked in the insurance industry in the City for over 30 years. He has served on numerous Boards, company and marketing committees covering such areas as investments, policy, HR, IT, FSA compliance etc, as well as technical insurance and claims committees. Peter’s outside interests include old buildings, theatre, opera and the visual arts. He is a Past Master and Court member of the Worshipful Company of Cooks and a veteran member of the Honourable Artillery Company. Peter has been a Governor of the College since December 2002.
